Vicky's Birth Story
Here's a rundown...Sunday I was having contractions as usual. Nothing too serious, just lots of BH. Well, about 7:30 pm I decided to start timing them. They were running 8-10 mins apart when I was resting and 4-5 mins apart when I was up walking around. I really didn't think anything of it, but when by 11:00 they were still coming at the same intervals I decided to put a call in to my doc. One of the other docs in the office was on call and said that she didn't understand why my doc had sent me home at 4 cm and 80% with twins. She told me to come in and if I had made ANY progress she would do the c/s. Well, I went in and she put me at 5 cm and 90% so they started the IV and got the OR ready. We went into the OR around 1:00 and they did the spinal block. They procedure went great and the boys were born...Travis Austin 6 lbs 4.5 oz at 1:27 AM and Keith Anthony 4 lbs 12 oz at 1:29 AM. They both were crying so I took that as a good sign. They took the boys to the nursery, tied my tubes and sewed me back up.
When they moved me to recovery, they told me that they had been put in NICU. Travis was having a little trouble breathing so they put a breathing tube in and gave him a shot to develop his lungs. Keith was doing better so they just gave him a nasal canyon with a low flow of oxygen to keep his breathing regulated. By Tuesday Keith was off of all breathing help, but he was having some trouble regulating his temp so they put him in an isolet (incubator) to keep him warm. Travis got rid of the breathing tube, and they put him on a nasal canyon. The radiologist determined that their bowels weren't ready to handle eating yet so they remained on the IVs. Nothing really changed until yesterday when Travis got off all breathing assistance and they determined that Keith was ready to go into an open crib and both babies were ready to start eating. They started on 5 cc's every 6 hours. However, Keith had to go under a photo light for jaundice. They are continuing to make great progress. Keith is no longer under the jaundice light, and both babies tolerated the feedings well and they have increased the feedings to 5 ccs every 3 hours. By 7:00 tonight they will increase to 10 ccs every 3 hours. They will continue to increase the amount until they reach 45 ccs every 3 hours. They nurses are really optimistic and say that if the boys continue to eat as well as they are now and their bowels tolerate the increase in volume they should be released sometime next week, maybe as early as Tuesday or Wednesday.
